Delegated Marking

What is delegated marking?

Delegated marking, is a marking function available within Blackboard assignments that allows you to assign staff in your course to mark particular sets of student assignment submissions. Roles with default marking privileges include instructor, teaching assistant, and marker. This may be useful for large classes where the assignment is generic and does not require specialist subject knowledge, as it allows you to distribute marking tasks randomly.

The users who help you mark are called delegated markers. Delegated markers follow the same grading steps as instructors, but they can only access assignment attempts assigned to them.

Where can I find the delegated marking settings?

Delegated marking can be accessed via the additional settings cog on the top right corner of any Blackboard assignment editing screen.

How has it changed from Blackboard Original

In the Blackboard Original version, Delegated Marking permitted double marking, or being able to provide two marks per student submission before the marks were reconciled. This feature is not available in the Blackboard Ultra version.

Delegated marking is now only used for allowing instructors to distribute marking tasks for an assessment to multiple markers. Instructors can assign markers to groups of students using delegated marking and the markers will only see those students they are assigned, which can include randomly generated groups.

Marks will no longer need reconciled as there will only be one mark per submission.

Note: Delegated marking works with one grader per submission whereas Two Markers per Student (parallel marking) works with multiple graders and therefore requires a reconcilement of grades.

Setting up delegated marking for an assignment

  1. Open the assignment in edit view.

  2. Select the Assignment Settings cog to open the panel.

  1. Under Evaluation options, select Delegated Marking

  2. Select Assign markers. From the Delegated Marking page, select a group set ( please note groups need to be set up in advance).

  3. For each group in the set, select the graders.

    • A group set can include one or more graders in each group. If multiple graders are assigned to the same group, they will share the grading responsibility.

    • Graders assigned to a group of students can only view submissions for those students on the assessment’s submission page. They can only post grades for their assigned group members.

    • Unassigned instructors enrolled on the course can view all student submissions on the assessment’s submission page. They can post grades for all students.

    • If you'd like to delegate randomly to course graders, first set up a randomized Group Set.

  4. Select Save. You return to the settings panel.

  5. Select Save to save your settings.
