Alternative title - Setting time limits, Posting scores, automated feedback and resetting test attempts

Deciding which options to choose in the test settings can depend on what type of questions you are using, how you would like to display marks and feedback to students and when marks, correct answers and feedback will be available for students to view. Blackboard tests have optional settings to include multiple attempts. There may also be times when you might need to reset a student attempt or exclude an attempt for a test.

Due date

A default due date of the next day is automatically selected when you set up a test. You will need to amend this or select No due date.

If you are adding a visibility rule to make the test visible on a certain date and if the test is timed, you can select No due date

Attempts allowed

The default number of attempts is 1. If you choose to allow students to attempt multiple times, make sure that you also select which attempt to mark:

  • First attempt

  • Last attempt

  • All attempts

Setting time limits

Select Add a timer to set up a timed test.

ADD IMAGE

In the Settings panel, select Add time limit in the Additional Tools section.

The timer appears at the bottom of the window to let students know how much time is left.

The timer keeps running whether or not students are actively working on the test. If they save a draft or leave the test window, the countdown continues and their work is saved and submitted when time is up.

Marking and submissions -

  • Post assessment marks automatically is selected by default. This means that your students grade will be posted automatically as soon as the test is graded. If you do not wish students to see their grade immediately, untick this box.

Resetting test attempts

It is critical to check the student’s attempt before resetting as they may have answered all questions before encountering problems.

If necessary, you can delete or exclude a student's test attempt. If you delete the submission, it will be cleared from the Gradebook and the student can retake the test and be awarded a new grade.

If you exclude the submission, the student can retake the test but the new grade is not posted to the Gradebook CONFIRM WITH CDLE

  1. In the Gradebook, select the Students tab.

  2. Click the title of the test that you wish to delete or exclude.
