Alternative title - Setting time limits, Posting scores, automated feedback and resetting test attemptsDeciding which options to choose in the test settings can depend on what type of questions you are using, how you would like to display marks and feedback to students and when marks, correct answers and feedback will be available for students to view. Blackboard tests have optional settings to include multiple attempts. There may also be times when situations in which you might need to reset a student attempt or exclude an attempt for a test.

Test settings in ultra

To modify Test Settings in ultra, select the cog icon.

Due date

A default due date of the next day is automatically selected when you set up a test. You will need to amend this or select No due date.

If you are adding a visibility rule to make the test visible on a certain date and if the test is timed, you can select No due date

Attempts allowed

The default number of attempts is 1. If you choose to allow students to attempt multiple times, make sure that you also select which attempt to mark:

  • First attempt

  • Last attempt

  • All attempts

Setting time limits

Select Add a timer to set up a timed test.

In the Settings panel, select Add time limit in the Additional Tools section.

The timer appears at the bottom of the window to let students know how much time is left.

Note

The timer keeps running whether or not students are actively working on the test. If they save a draft or leave the test window, the countdown continues and their work is saved and submitted when time is up.

Posting scores and automated feedback

Marking and submissions -

  • Post assessment marks automatically is selected by default. This means that your students grade will be posted automatically as soon as the test is graded. If you do not wish students to see their grade immediately, untick this box.

It is critical to check the student’s attempt before resetting as they may have answered all questions before encountering problems.

If necessary, you can delete or exclude a student's test attempt. If you delete the submission, it will be cleared from the Gradebook and the student’s test attempt. This can be done by either excluding or deleting the attempt.

It is usually recommended that you select Exclude Attempt if you wish toallow the student another attempt at taking the test. You will then need to add an exemption for your student to retake the test.

  1. In the Gradebook, select the Students tab.

  2. Click the title of the test and the individual student attempt that you wish to reset.

  1. You can now choose either Exclude Attempt or Delete attempt from the dropdown menu under the mark details for this test submission.

If you exclude the submission, the grade will not count but you will need to add a further exemption for your student to be able to retake the test.

  1. In Student view in the Gradebook, click the student’s name to display their marks.

  2. In the Test item, click the ellipses (3 dots) to open the dropdown menu.

  1. Select Add or edit exemptions. This will open the test settings for this student.

  2. Amend the Attempts to allow an additional attempt for this student and click Save. Your student can now retake the test.

If you need to permanently remove a Test attempt, open the individual student submission.

  1. Select Delete Attempt from the dropdown menu.

  2. The attempt will be cleared from the Gradebook.

  3. The student can retake the test and be awarded a new grade.

If you exclude the submission, the student can retake the test but the new grade is not posted to the Gradebook CONFIRM WITH CDLE

  1. In the Gradebook, select the Students tab.

  2. Click the title of the test that you wish to delete or exclude.

Note

Deleting a student attempt is final, and cannot be undone.
