Creating a video presentation (oral) dropbox

Use these instructions if you want your students to submit a PowerPoint presentation with a voiceover. To make it easier for you to mark, ask students to export their recorded presentation as a movie file and use Panopto student submission to upload to a standard Blackboard dropbox.

First create a Blackboard Assignment as normal and add the advice below for students to record and submit their presentation.

Create your Blackboard assignment dropbox in the normal way:

In Course Content, click on the plus and select Create from the sub menu.

Top Tips for successful Video submissions with Panopto

  • Familiarise yourself with the process: submitting video to Blackboard assignment dropbox, so you can advise struggling students

  • Stipulate correct file format: make sure your students use a recognised video format: .mp4, .m4v, .mov, .qt, .wmv, .wma, .webm, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi see file formats for full list

    • Panopto does not accept PowerPoint presentations with embedded audio (.ppt). Students need to export your Powerpoint file as an MP4.

  • Advise on file size: Video files are larger than text and image files and if they are recorded on the latest phones will be even larger and may time out during upload to the assignment dropbox. So advise the students:

    • Make sure files are not too big, they should be less than 100MB per minute

    • If they are bigger than 2GB use compression software like Handbrake or Adobe Media Encoder

    • Ask students to change their export settings to SD/720 or 1080p/ HD.

    • Make sure they use robust connection (e.g. Edu-roam) not a mobile to upload the files
