Adding a document page

Document pages are great for grouping different types of content (text, images, links, pdf, video) in one interface like a web page e.g.

Adding a document page to your course

Within the Course Content window, hover your mouse where you wish to add new content and select the (purple) + icon.

This brings up the add content context menu, select Create

This brings up the Create Item context menu, select Document.

The following document editor will appear; give the document page a title, by clicking on the placeholder title at the top left. You can then add one or more blocks of content.

Selecting the ‘Content' block opens the standard text editor which allows you to add text, images, links as well as video and PDFs.

Selecting Content will open the text content editor

Here you can type and format text, add images and other media using the toolbar.

Remember to regularly save your file, edits are not automatically saved.

Adding text to the document

Type directly into the text box or copy text from a source such as a Word document. You can use the toolbar to format your text, changing the style, font, colour, font size.

Adding images to the document

Within the text editor select the Image button.

The default option is to upload images from your device (only jpg or png), you can also add an image from upSplash or generate an image using AI.

Chose your image, select Next, set Aspect Ratio and select Next.

 

Edit the file options in the image editor.

Make sure you add Alt text to comply with Accessibility guidelines. Enter a meaningful alternative text description of the appearance or function of the image. Set to view only, unless the students need to download the file. Click on Save

 

Adding video to a document

We encourage the use of Panopto in the university and it is the default video player for Blackboard. Select the plus symbol in the toolbar to insert media content. Select Content Market from the context menu.

This launches the list of Institution Tools, select Panopto video embed

It defaults to the current course folder (use the drop down arrow to navigate to another folder), select the radio button beside the video to be embedded and the Insert button.

NB Panopto defaults to the Choose tab, select the Upload tab to upload a video stored on your device or Record to record a video.

Enter a name for the video and select Insert.

Uploading files to a document

Choosing File upload or Cloud upload allows you to add PDFs to your document.

Select your file, and an Alt tag, if it’s an image and choose whether it is to be used for display (viewing) or downloading.

Editing your document

Remember to save your file regularly!

When you’ve saved your document, you need to click on Edit content to continue to edit your document page.

In edit mode, when you roll over a block a purple outline and an edit tab appears. You can chose the pencil tool to re-edit the content of the block, the bin symbol for deleting or reorder the block by clicking and dragging on the tab with the 6 dots.

The document page consists of four columns, you can use the handles at the side to resize the item within those 4 columns and then use the six dots on the tab to reposition the block as with the code snippet block below.

You can also add the following types of block to a Document

  • HTML allows you to embed external learning, e.g. Menti, Sway, Forms, etc.

  • File Upload allows you to upload from Computer or University’s OneDrive

  • Cloud upload allows you to login to a separate cloud account like Google Drive

  • Convert a file, allows you to add and edit the contents of a PDF file
