Marking and feedback in a group assignment
Marking and feedback in group assignment submissions in Blackboard Ultra is similar to Marking and Feedback in Blackboard Assignments for individual submissions.
However, it is recommended that you follow the workflow below if you wish to allocate individual marks to different members in the same group.
Instructions
Assign an overall group mark and feedback
From the Gradebook, in Markable Items view, select the group assignment by clicking the title.
Select a group's submission by clicking the title of a Group team to open the submission and review the submitted work.
This will open the submission in the ultra ‘Inline grading’ view, which is the recommended workflow for grading a group assignment.
If you are not using a rubric to calculate the grade, you can enter an overall mark in the marking pill (grading box). Then add any general feedback for the group into the Overall Feedback textbox and click Save.
If you are using a rubric, scroll down to mark using the rubric and at this stage, you can also add Overall Feedback for the group as a whole. Don’t forget to click Save.
The recorded mark will serve as the baseline for all group members.
In a Group assignment, it is important to remember when using a rubric, this cannot be individualised. So, although you may go on to award an individual score for some group members, the rubric will display the score for the group as a whole.
At this stage, you can add individual feedback if required. Scroll to the bottom of the screen to add feedback for individual group members. Click Save to record each individual’s feedback when you have added it.
You can continue to mark and record feedback in the 'Inline grading' view for all of the groups. To choose the another group, click the > button to expand the list of groups that need marking and select the next group to mark.
To exit this view and go back to the Gradebook, click the X button at the top of the screen.
Adjust individual marks for group members
From the Gradebook, in Markable Items view, select the group assignment to open the group submissions. Here you will see a list of all students in each group and the overall group mark. Expand the list of group members by clicking the number of members.
In this view, click the pill for the group member, to modify their mark based on their individual contribution.
When you change an individual grade, the overall group's grade appears as Multiple. The individual member's grade is labelled as Override.
In this view, it is also possible to add/ edit the individualised feedback, for each student requiring an adjustment:
Click on their name to access their individual grading panel.
Add personalized feedback explaining the adjustment.
Save the individual mark.
You can also assign different grades in the Gradebook grid view.
To modify the grade in the Gradebook grid view:
Select a group member's cell. All other group members are highlighted in the grid.
Edit the group member's grade as needed.
You have the option to apply this edited grade to everyone in the group.
Be clear with students about the requirements of the assignment, outline expectations around behaviour, communication and effort of group members. Ensure that they know the criteria for marking the assignment and if grades are awarded to the group as a whole or individually allocated to each student.
