You can create rubrics from within the Gradebook and associate them with assessments later. You can also create a rubric when you create an Assignment or a Test. The guidance below shows how to set up a standard/ quantitative rubric from within Gradebook. This rubric can then be associated with a Blackboard assignment, test or discussion.

Overall workflow for creating rubrics

  1. add the rubrica rubric (within Gradebook or to an assessment)

  2. define its criteria

  3. specify achievement levels

  4. add weights and percentages

Sample Blackboard Rubrics

The Centre for Digital Learning Enhancement have created some sample Blackboard Learn Rubrics for staff, based on the Ulster University Assessment and Feedback Handbook. Rubrics are commonly referred to as Quantitative (include scale values and criteria percentages) and Qualitative (no numeric scoring).

Creating rubrics

The guidance below shows how to set up a standard/ quantitative rubric.

Login to Blackboard.

  1. Select the programme you will be working in from the Course List.

  2. From the Control Panel select the Course Tools link. The Course Tools menu will expand.

  3. Select the Rubrics link. The Rubrics page will open.

 

 

  1. Type a Name for the Rubric. The name is the title text that identifies the rubric.

  2. Enter a description of the rubric to make it easier to associate it to relevant assignments.

  3. To edit the Rubric Grid:

    1. Select Add Row to add a new criterion at the bottom of the grid.

    2. Select Add Column to add a new level of achievement to the grid.

    3. Select Show Points to enter a single point value for each Level of Achievement.

    4. Select Show Point Range to enter a high and low value to create a point range for each Level of Achievement. Only one option can be selected.

    5. Select Edit from the contextual menu of the labels identifying rows and columns to change their names.

    6. Enter a point value or range of values for each cell.

    7. Enter a description defining the criteria and the associated Level of Achievement.

    8. Select the Submit button to save your Rubric.

How to Apply a Rubric in the Grade Center

Access the Grade Center.

Find the column you would like to associate your Rubric with. From the contextual menu of that column, select View and Add Rubrics. A pop-up will open.

Select the Rubric you want to add.

Add a rubric within Gradebook

  1. Select Gradebook.

  2. Select Gradebook Settings (cog icon).

  1. Scroll down to Course rubrics.

  2. Select Create.

  3.  On the New Rubric page, type a title with a limit of 255 characters. If you don't add a title, "New Rubric" and the date appear as the title.

  4. Select Percentage Range from the Rubric Type drop-down menu.

By default, four criteria rows and four achievement level columns appear. You can add, delete, and rename the rows and columns. Point to a cell to access the edit and delete icons. Select the Add icon wherever you want to add a row or column and type a title. If you don't want the new row or column, you can delete it.

  1. Rename each Criteria to reflect your assignment learning outcomes.

  2. Amend the percentage weighting of each Criteria so the overall total is one hundred.

  3. Insert additional Criterion or delete any you don't need.

  4. Rename the column headings to match the required levels of achievement.

  5. Amend the percentage ranges of each level of achievement.

  1. Select Save.

Associate a rubric with a Blackboard assignment, test or discussion

  1. Find the assessment that you would like to associate your rubric with.

  2. Select the Settings icon to open the Settings Panel.

  3. In Additional Tools, select Add grading rubric.

  4. To use an existing rubric, select the one you want from the list under the buttons and click Add.

Using the Rubric to mark offline assignments

Having created a Rubric, you’re not simply limited to using it with the built-in tools.

  1. Access the Grade Center.

  2. Select the Create Column button.
